Billions of people awoke this morning, ate their breakfast and off to work they went. By the time the return home that evening, somewhere in this world a Rhino was killed for it's horn. By the time you go to sleep another will have perished at the hands of poachers or trophy hunters. Still another was slaughtered while you blissfully slept the night away... The moment you take your first sip of coffee the whole process has started all over again
Every eight hours, a rhino is killed illegally in South Africa. 1215 were killed last year.
This week, a female rhino was discovered with her face hacked off and left for dead but, she refused to die. The pictures of the brutality inflicted on this poor creature and her will to live went viral.
After she was discovered, Vets rushed to her aid and as of this report she is currently in a stable condition and is expected to live but her life may be short lived at best, knowing how Rhino poaching is increasing at a rate that is incomprehensible given the fact that the conservation efforts to save endangered species has been at an all time high.
The amazing story of this Rhino who refused to go into that good night peacefully is an inspiration to conservationist every where, but the sad truth is within a few years if this Rhino recovers, she will probably once again be in the cross-hairs of some poacher
Rhino horns are made of keratin, the same material found in our hair and our fingernails. For years I worked in construction and have seen many fingers getting smashed, fingernails torn right off, nails blackened from a misplaced hammer blow and as they say "Time heals all wounds"
So this poor Rhino who felt every second as inhumane poachers hacked at her with knives and machete's will one day have her horn return. It may be deformed, it may not look beautiful, or pristine as it once did but, a disfigured horn will grow none-the-less and some barbaric poacher will not care about her disfigurement, or the torture she endured... They will only see dollar signs attached to a bag of meat.
Below are pictures of the result of the attack and the amazing attempt at rescuing this poor creature. Clicking on a picture will open the gallery viewer
