The way we have been feeding our cats generally does not match the lifestyle cats were designed for.
Unlike Dogs, Cats have not been subjected to selective breeding during the transformation from wild to domestication and therefore they still have their instinctive need to hunt in tact. Dr Sarah Ellis, Feline Behavior Specialist, cautioned “This modern lifestyle could be dangerous to felines." By making a few simple changes to the way we feed them, we can help our cats to live longer, healthier and happier lives. The plan is based on scientific evidence that the doctors have collected. The plan helps every cat owner mimic the conditions cats would usually contend with to get their food. There are 96 million domestic cats in the United States and some studies claim that nearly 50 per cent of our beautiful little fur balls are overweight or obese, which makes them look more like Star Trek Tribbles than cats. Scientist says a cats modern lifestyle could lead to them to being mentally lethargic and overeating could be one of the main consequences of their boredom. To beat the problem Dr Ellis and Dr Rowe are recommending pet owners give their cats, five or more small portions of food a day instead of few meals in bigger bowls. They also urge the use of ‘puzzle feeders’ to get the animals thinking about how to get hold of their food, moving the bowl around the house will make then have to hunt for it. If you have had your food dish in the same spot for years, it's not too late. Just move the dish a few feet away from that area each day, until you are confident they get the idea and are hunting when you are at work or away from home. Please note: Water dishes should remain in the same place (As it does in the wild) making sure they have plenty of water and please wash out your cat's water dish every day. Wildlife Planet is pretty confident that you would not like to drink out of the same glass for days on end. ************************* Wildlife Planet Tip: Add a teaspoon of apple cider Apple Cider vinegar for each quart of water. Doing this everyday will keep fleas at bay. I have 5 rescue cats indoors and at least another 5 that are feral and wander by my house for dinner, some even have little houses in my backyard. You'll be amazed how many fleas can enter any home, through doors, windows or even catching a ride inside your house by jumping on your clothes. While a quick vacuum every day (Unless you don't really have fleas then every other day) it is the best way to keep your home free of fleas, apple cider vinegar just adds another layer of protection and best of all it is safe for your kitties. Your cat may not like the taste, but I'll explain how I converted all my cats over. Everyday has just added 1 drop to their water dish, then add another drop every day till you reach a teaspoon per quart (Takes about 30 days) Apple Cider Vinegar does not kill fleas, but it makes their blood taste awful and they will jump off your dog or cat and you can then suck up those little bastards with a daily vacuuming.
