Ricky Gervais donated $25,000 from proceeds raised during his “Humanity World Tour” show in New York City. This money will go to the Delta Society, an organization which works to improve human health through service and therapy animals. Also receiving a donation was the New York headquarters of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA). Previously, Gervais’ donated $20,000 from his show last month in Chicago. That donation was split between Gilda Radner’s cancer support community, Gilda’s Club Chicago. And Chicago’s largest pet adoption foundation PAW’s. PAW’s helps dogs rescued from Yulin and other dog meat victims in Asia to find forever homes. Gervais’s selfless gesture is not surprising. Earlier this year, Gervais was awarded the prestigious Lord Houghton Award for Service to Animal Welfare by Animal Defenders International (ADI), for his animal advocacy work. With over four million Facebook fans. 12 million Twitter followers. Gervais is known for using his social media power for good. He’s known for posting poignant messages on Facebook about trophy hunting. Calling out the atrocities of the fur industry. And the absurdity of keeping animals in captivity. e just recently shared a powerful message about the importance of bees on Twitter, as well as a passionate statement about the cruel Yulin dog meat festival. He just recently shared a powerful message about the importance of bees on Twitter. As well as a passionate statement about the cruel Yulin dog meat festival. Brought awareness to Yulin In 2013 Gervais really brought The Yulin Festival into public awareness. Gervais passionate and very direct posts about the torture and slaughter taking place in Yulin, China. Made the media stand up and take notice. Saving one animal might not change the world, but for that one animal, their entire world is changed. Please remember Yulin is just a snapshot of the animal cruelty taking place all over Asia every day. Annually up to 10 million dogs and cats are brutalized and killed for human consumption in China. The world must focus its attention on getting China to pass Animal rights laws. Animal rescue organizations must also start a nationwide spay and neutering program that will bring the animal population under control. For a model of this program look no further than soi dog who have been fighting to keep Thailands population of street dogs under control for over a decade.
